Having had to procure part-time employment at the King of Prussia mall hasn’t done much for my faith in humanity. Granted, I already knew that people are ill-mannered, uncouth and sometimes unintelligible. I was not prepared, though, for the lack of style. This job is a sort of “window to the world”, and when not occupied with actually working, I can sit and style watch. Or style-search, should I say.
On a typical Wednesday about one in twenty women look like they actually gave a thought to what they donned this morning. Sweat pants with chipped polish and flip-flops, sheer t-shirts riding up over muffin tops, and fur lined moccasins that remind me of bedroom slippers are what walked by in the past five minutes. If it weren’t for the windows…
My favorite window this week is Piazza Sempione. This Milan based company has gorgeous clothing in the most luxurious materials. The extremely chic sales associate was very kind and really knew the line. My favorite was a dolman sleeve dress made of linen detailed with tucks and texture and topped with an artisanal necklace made of vintage lace. Perfect and I hope they don’t mind if I knock it off for myself, although I don’t have time to fly to Italy for fabric. I am working at the mall.

Breezy Autumn Day….

With the popularity of layering fashions this season, the autumn ritual of “putting away” your summer wardrobe might go the way of “no white” after Labor day. I’m thinking my vintage Dolce and Gabbana floral cocktail dress would make a fabulous jumper over tights and a turtleneck. Tights will also turn my tailored shorts into cool weather wear and my flowy tank tops will be doing double duty as vests. All of a sudden I have a fall Saturday with nothing to do! Guess I’ll go shop for a pair of over-the-knee flat boots…..

The weather here in the Northeast is gross, absolute hell with humidity. Check on your loved ones and pets!
Since I lack the wherewithall to step one cork-wedge-clad foot outside, I have been working on my Etsy site. Everything is easy and light, with a bent towards versatility, most pieces can go over a bathing suit or under a blazer. www.susangolembiski.etsy.com

Snow and Tattoos

I long for some color! Style! There is some much needed NYC people watching in my near future… Glistening white stuff everywhere. I am snowed in with Katie and Sophie and everyone else in my neighborhood. Looking out my window all I see is bulky LLBean and polypropylene fleece. Probably a good thing seeing that I have found myself living in the land of the pasty and cellulite ridden. No offense, but the food around here even resembles a dimpled ass. I suppose a girl could tattoo her thighs like one local bruiser I know, but instead I think I’ll design a line of bathing suit cover-ups.
This week I am finishing my Victorian ball gown for an upcoming soirre’. Brown taffeta and black lace, I am going steampunk.

Yes, finally set up an Etsy account and posted some of the items left over from my brick-and-mortar shop, Frock. I had picked up some outrageous prints at Ikea about 2 years ago and finally whipped out some girls jumpers. Kid clothing isn’t usually my thing, but since I have the most freaking gorgeous grandchildren to inspire me…see for yourself!

Hemming pants and relining and alterations may feed my checking account, but these mundane sewing tasks do not feed my soul. The entire time I was laboring today I was cursing my lot in life, asking the gods of creativety, why can’t I just design? Why do I havr to pay bills. How ordinary.
I have two of my little munchkins here this weekend and I intend to use them as slave labor. I created several little jumpers from the most awesome Ikea fabric. Remember Marimekko? Well, my little darlings will be modeling these items so I can finally get some photos, finally put something on my Etsy store, and finally have something to post on my website.
Bill paying be damned!

Welcome to frockclad, a blog about fashion, style, design and textiles from a sewers point of view. Daily musings may include subjects such as: trend overviews and how to copy them, the latest offerings from designers and how to fake ‘em, re-styling, upcycling and re-interpreting.

I had my first meeting yesterday with Jennifer and Natalie about the second annual Goodwill Fashion Runway Show. This one will be September 9th, same place as last year, The Designers Outlet, West Reading. Save the date! The show was phenomenal and being asked to take part again was an honor. My part begins immediately with some intense research and fashion forecasting. The open call for models will be held March 13, place will be determined soon.
